American composer Terence Blanchard’s “Fire Shut Up in My Bones” wins the Grammy for Best Opera Recording.

Fire Shut Up in My Bones, American Terence Blanchard‘s opera premiered at the St. Louis Opera in 2019 – and the first by a black composer to be performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on 27 September 2021, reopening operatic activities after being closed for more than a year and a half due to the covid-19 pandemic – is the winner of the 2023 Grammy for Best Opera Recording. Recorded as part of the New York Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD series, the performance stars baritone Will Liverman and sopranos Latonia Moore and Angel Blue, and is musically directed by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The opera is based on the memoir by The New York Times journalist Charles McRay Blow, published in 2014.
