John Pickard, winner of the 2020 “Gramophone” Contemporary Classical Award.
The British magazine Gramophone has already announced the winners of its annual awards for 2020. Created in 1977, they are considered the most important in the international classical music industry. In the contemporary classical category, the winning album was The Gardener of Aleppo – the title of the first of the album’s compositions – by British composer John Pickard, Professor of Composition at Bristol’s Department of Music. This recording, released on the BIS Records label, includes seven of Pickard’s compositions, composed over a period of more than thirty years, and performed by the Nash Ensemble, the resident chamber ensemble at London’s Wigmore Hall.
