Nonesuch releases this Friday the recording of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, of “Dante” by Thomas Adès.
This Friday, the Nonesuch label releases on both physical (double vinyl Lp) and digital formats, the recording of Dante, the three-act ballet based on Dante’s Divine Comedy composed by British composer Thomas Adès. The recording was made in the spring of 2022 at the American premiere in Los Angeles of the piece at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel.
Dante is the fourth major stage work by the British composer, pianist and conductor, recently awarded the Frontiers of Knowledge prize by the BBVA Foundation, after his three previous operas, Powder Her Face (1995), The Tempest (2003) and The Exterminating Angel (2016). Dante is a co-production of the Royal Ballet of London and the Paris Opera Ballet, bringing together choreographer Wayne McGregor, artist Tacita Dean, lighting designer Lucy Carter, playwright Uzma Hameed and composer Thomas Adès to create a multimedia performance as part of the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death and the completion of his Divine Comedy. The musical commission for the score was given by Gustavo Dudamel, then artistic and musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
