The Fundación SGAE organises three days of tribute to Spanish minimal music, with concerts by Pep Llopis and Llorenç Barber.
The Fundación SGAE, in collaboration with the Teatro Real – and on the occasion of the Madrid premiere of John Adams’ minimalist opera Nixon in China – is organising a series of lectures and concerts entitled Minimal español. Minimalism, a breath of fresh air in the 1980s, which deals with the work of Llorenç Barber, Pep Llopis, and Carles Santos and film director Pere Portabella. The activities take place on 25, 26 and 27 April at the Sala Berlanga in Madrid (Andrés Mellado, 53 street).
Minimal español kicks off on Tuesday 25 April at 19:00 with a double film session devoted entirely to the innovative film work of Pere Portabella, with a selection of documentaries and films in which the soundtrack was provided by the Spanish composer Carles Santos, a pioneer of musical minimalism in Spain. The session includes the screening of Vampir-Cuadecuc (1970), a documentary on the filming of Jess Franco’s Count Dracula, Play Back (1970), Acció Santos (1973) and Pont de Varsovia (1989).
On Wednesday 26th, starting at 20:30, a concert is scheduled by Llorenç Barber, a researcher of plurifocal music who will offer us his show Minimalisms of words, metals, harmonics and attitudes. Finally, on Thursday 27th, at 20:30, there will be a lecture in which Pep Llopis, accompanied by the dancer Toni Aparisi, will relive his mythical 1987 album Poiemusia, la Nau del Argonautes, re-released in 2017 by the New York label RVNG, which recognised it as a fundamental album in the history of international minimalist music.
