“Les Transformacions”, composed by Aleix Puig Caminal and performed by the Quartet Brossa, receives the Alicia Award for the best Catalan record production of 2022.

Coinciding with the European Music Day, last night the Catalan Academy of Music held the Alicia Awards, named after the famous Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha (Barcelona, 1923-2009), whose first centenary of her birth took place on 23 May. Among the many categories that received awards, the Alicia 2023 prize for the best recording production was awarded to Les transformacions, by the Quartet Brossa, published last year by Satélite K, and comprising twenty musical pieces for string quartet composed by the Spanish violinist, composer and orchestra conductor Aleix Puig Caminal (Terrassa, 1979), who is also a founding member of the quartet.

Puig Caminal’s musical pieces are inspired by an unfinished set of love poems by Johannes Eyckermann, 16th century mathematician and collaborator of Nicolaus Copernicus, mixing contemporary expressive resources with elements of early music and baroque. The work expresses musically all the stages of a love relationship, as they appear in Eyckermann’s collection of poems: “from the lovers’ rapt flight in the first bars, to the memory of the passion experienced, recalled by the abandoned individual”.
