Matthew Aucoin premieres “The No One’s Rose”.
Today, Wednesday 25th, the world premiere of The No One’s Rose, a combination of music, poetry, theatre and dance composed and conducted by the American Matthew Aucoin commissioned by the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra will take place at Stanford University’s Bing Auditorium. Based on the poems about the Holocaust by the Romanian poet Paul Celan included in his book Die Niemandsrose, the premiere will be extended with two further performances tomorrow, Thursday and Sunday 29th. Among the singers taking part are soprano Julia Bullock and countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, famous, among other roles, for having played the pharaoh Akhenaten in Philip Glass’ opera Akhnaten. The play also features a staging illustrated with images from Anselm Kiefer’s painting Die Niemandsrose, inspired by Celan’s own poems.
