The Spanish Sigma Project Quartet premieres a piece by Francesca Verunelli in Luxembourg.

The Spanish saxophone Sigma Project Quartet performs tomorrow, Friday, at the chamber music hall of the Luxembourg Philharmonic with a completely contemporary programme, including the world premiere of In my beginning is my end (ma fin est mon commencement), by the Italian composer Francesca Verunelli (Pietrasanta, 1979). The concert, in fact, will be preceded by a talk with the composer and the Sigma Project Quartet saxophonist Alberto Chaves.

Founded in Madrid in 2008, the quartet is made up of Andrés Gomis, Alberto Chaves, Josetxo Silguero and Ángel Soria. In Luxembourg, the latter, who is about to become a father, will be replaced by Alejandro Oliván. On its website, the quartet defines itself as “an essential vehicle for instrumental music of the 21st century”. And it adds that “if the string quartet was the instrument par excellence in past centuries, SIGMA Project, in the 21st century, claims that role for the saxophone quartet”. In addition to Verunelli’s world premiere, the rest of the programme includes Knossos, by the Spaniard Alberto Posadas; Saxophonquartett, by the Austrian Georg Friedrich Haas; Homeless Carrera, by the French saturationist Raphaël Cendo, and Ash – music for the Eremozoic, by the Australian Liza Lim.
