World premiere of Mauricio Sotelo in Badajoz.

The Klangforum Wien, one of the best contemporary music chamber orchestras in the world, will give a concert tonight at 20:30 in the Palacio de Congresos de Badajoz under the baton of the Spanish conductor and composer Mauricio Sotelo (Madrid, 1961).

The programme, which forms part of the thirteenth edition of the Ciclo de Música Actual de Badajoz, co-produced by the Sociedad Filarmónica de Badajoz and the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM), features three works by Sotelo himself, winner of the National Music Prize in 2001: De magia, for alto or tenor saxophone, percussion and piano, from 1995, and De imaginum, signorum et idearum compositione I (composed in 1994 and revised in 1996). The third, De imaginum, signorum et idearum compositione II, is a world premiere, commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM) and the Klangforum Wien.

The rest of the programme of tonight’s concert consists of works by Olga Neuwirth (CoronAtion I: io son ferito ahimè, for solo percussion, composed in 2020), Bernhard Lang (Differenz / Wiederholung 21 ‘… and we just keep on pretending…’, for flute and percussion, from 2010) and Beat Furrer, co-founder of the Klangforum (Klavierquartett, from 2020).

Mauricio Sotelo is this season’s composer-in-residence at the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical, and fourteen concerts with works by him or under his direction are scheduled in Madrid, Basel, Badajoz, Alicante and Segovia. Today’s concert is the third in a series of concerts in which he is the main protagonist.
